Energetic and festive funaná
Tabanka presents its own contemporary interpretation of funaná; the popular dance music from Cape Verde. During Portuguese colonial rule, the music style was banned because of its supposedly inflammatory and sensual character. So it is hardly surprising that funaná became part of Cape Verdean identity after independence in 1975. It was originally the music of the descendants of slaves, which was mixed with pop and jazz in the 1980s. The young musicians of Tabanka all come from Rotterdam. They are guaranteed to put on a festive and electrifying show that will have everyone on their feet.
