For decades, Friesland’s peatland meadows have been subsiding by one or two centimetres each year. This phenomenon is caused by the province of Friesland’s policy of deep drainage in the area. As part of FEAN, we join Jan Kleefstra and landscape architect Peter de Ruyter in analysing the consequences and possible solutions for this far-reaching social issue.
FEAN is the artist-in-residence of Klanklânskippen, a multidisciplinary incubator and experimental forum that draws on the Frisian landscape as its source of inspiration. The project’s artistic team is formed by Piiptsjilling, uniting the musicians Mariska Baars, Jan Kleefstra, Romke Kleefstra, and Rutger Zuydervelt. As part of their residency, they invited three Belgian musicians. These are the jazz clarinettist and saxophonist Joachim Badenhorst, known for his improvisations. Sylvain Chauveau, a French composer living in Belgium, who makes minimalistic compositions for acoustic instruments, electronics, and vocals. And Annelies Monseré, whose work was initially based on piano and instrumental pieces but has since shifted its focus onto vocals. She experiments musically with various instruments such as the cello, guitar, xylophone and melodica.
During Cultura Nova, Rutger Zuydervelt, Sylvain Chauveau, and FEAN will perform in full line-up.
