EXCLUSIVE BENELUX SHOW: AVANT-GARDE ELECTRO LEGENDS FROM THE BALKANS

BORGHESIA (SL)

After Einstürzende Neubauten last year, Cultura Nova again presents an experimental avant-garde band that originated in the 1980s: Borghesia. The last album of this collective from the former Yugoslavia ‘Proti Kapitulaciji’ (Against the Capitulation) was released in 2018 and shows that experimentation and non-conformity are still high on the agenda. A comparison with Einstürzende Neubauten (who performed during Cultura Nova 2018) is therefore in order. With song titles like ‘Europa Umira’ (Europe Dies) and ‘Jaz Protestiram’ (I Protest) these electro veterans refuse to give in to the mass commerce.

Borghesia is a Slovenian electronic music/rock music group, founded in Ljubljana in 1982. The band was founded by members of the alternative theatre group Theatre FV-112/15. Borghesia created its aesthetics by using the images of what was forbidden, taboo and oppressed. Their sound is often compared to that of other groups in the period, such as D.A.F., Manufacture, and Front 242, which many cite as the main instigators of the genre ‘Electronic Body Music’ Borghesia and the legendary Laibach are seen as the most prominent representatives of Slovenian alternative pop music.
